Navigating Postpartum Dressing: Tips for Dressing Your Changing Body as a New Mom
Becoming a new mom is one of the most transformative experiences a woman can go through. Along with the joy and excitement of welcoming a new life into the world comes a whole host of physical changes that can be difficult to navigate. One of the most challenging aspects of postpartum life is finding clothes that fit and flatter your changing body. As a new mom myself, I’ve experienced these difficulties firsthand.
After giving birth, your body goes through a lot of changes. For starters, your belly won’t magically shrink back to its pre-pregnancy size right away (AHHHHH!). In fact, it can take weeks or even months for your uterus to shrink back to its normal size. This means that you may be dealing with a soft and squishy midsection for a while - oh, the famous "mommy pooch." Additionally, your breasts may be larger and more sensitive than usual if you’re nursing, which can make finding a comfortable bra a challenge.
All of these changes can make it tough to figure out what to wear. Clothes that used to fit comfortably may now be too tight or too loose. (RIP my favorite Target jeans!) You may find yourself reaching for the same few items over and over again because they’re the only things that feel comfortable. But wearing the same clothes day after day can quickly become boring and make you feel frumpy. As for me, I blamed the hormones, but one day I decided to throw away all my pre-pregnancy clothes... welp.
So, what’s a new mom to do? Here are a few tips that have helped me navigate this tricky period of postpartum dressing:
1. Don’t be afraid to size up. Your body has been through a lot, and it’s completely normal for your shape to be different than it was pre-baby. Instead of squeezing into clothes that no longer fit comfortably, try going up a size. You’ll feel more comfortable and confident in clothes that fit properly. ** FYI - I reordered those favorite Target jeans a size up, and I am one happy mama!
2. Look for pieces that flatter your new shape. Instead of trying to hide your post-baby belly or larger breasts, look for clothes that show off your best assets. Wrap dresses and tops can be especially flattering, as can high-waisted pants and skirts.
3. Invest in a few key pieces. You don’t need to overhaul your entire wardrobe after having a baby, but investing in a few pieces that make you feel good can do wonders for your confidence. A well-fitting pair of jeans, a comfortable nursing bra, and a few tops that make you feel put together can make a big difference. Here are some of my favorite basics:

4. Don’t forget about accessories. When you’re short on time and energy, accessories can be a quick and easy way to elevate your outfit. A statement necklace or a colorful scarf can add interest to even the most basic outfit. For example, pendant necklaces are so classy, and they brighten up anything you wear!
5. Give yourself grace. This was the most difficult thing to do because I was used to my itty-bitty body and eager to be cleared by my OBGYN. Getting back into shape was so important to me. However, I had to remind myself that my body just accomplished an incredible feat by bringing a baby into the world. It’s normal for your shape to be different, and it’s okay if it takes some time to feel comfortable in your post-baby body. Be kind to yourself and give yourself time to adjust.
In conclusion, dressing as a new mom can be a challenge, but it’s not impossible. By embracing your new shape, investing in a few key pieces, and giving yourself grace, you can feel confident and put together as you navigate this exciting new chapter of life.
