Finding Fellowship: Tips for Developing Strong Christian Relationships
Friendship is an essential aspect of our lives, and as Christians, it is vital to cultivate healthy, meaningful, and Christ-centered relationships. In the Bible, we see how Jesus himself had close friendships, such as with his disciples, Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. Let's talk about practical ways to grow Christian friendships.
1. Prioritize spending time with other Christians: One of the best ways to grow Christian friendships is to make an effort to spend time with other Christians. This can be attending church services, joining a small group, or participating in a Bible study. These settings provide an opportunity to meet other believers and build relationships based on shared faith and values. At our church we have connect groups of all types from youth to young adults, to women, to general! They have truly changed my life, my marriage, my walk with Jesus in general!
2. Be intentional: Developing a deep and meaningful friendship requires intentionality. Make an effort to invest time and energy in the relationship, be open and honest, and seek to build trust. This can include regularly reaching out to the person, setting up a coffee date, or planning an outing together. The crazy thing about connect groups and how easily those women (in my case) become your sisters! They become part of your every day life!
3. Pray for your friends: As Christians, prayer is a powerful tool, and we should pray for our friends. We can ask God to bless and guide them, protect them from harm, and provide them with the strength and wisdom they need. Praying for our friends not only strengthens our relationship with them but also deepens our faith. Nothing more beautiful than knowing there are a group of women praying for me and wanting the best for me and vise versa!
4. Serve together: My favorite part of it all! Serving others is a critical aspect of Christian life, and doing so with a friend can be an enriching experience. Look for opportunities to serve in your church or community and invite your friend to join you. Serving together can strengthen your bond and provide a shared sense of purpose. My husband and I serve as youth leaders at our church and something this simple has brought our marriage closer as we talk about the struggles our youth are going through. It's allowed us to connect in a deeper level!
5. Communicate effectively: Communication is essential in any relationship, and it is particularly important in Christian friendships. Be open and honest with your friend, listen to them carefully, and seek to understand their perspective. Avoid gossip or speaking negatively about others, and always speak the truth in love. Plus, ain't nobody got time to talk bad about someone else.
6. Share your struggles and joys: In Christian friendships, it is essential to share both the struggles and joys of life. This allows you to support each other in difficult times and celebrate together during the good times. Be vulnerable and transparent with your friend, and create a safe space where you can share your heart without fear of judgment. I'm beyond grateful for my best friends because of how loving they are towards me, especially with my struggles. They don't just turn from me, but rather love me with the same love of Christ! Plus, they also cheer me on when life is filled with joy!
xo, Taira!
